This mortar patterned table center was dyed dark blue using natural indigo dyes. Mochi paste was placed on white fabric and drew the design, added soybean juice (gojiru) to pigments for coloration, and then the fabric was soaked the over and over in natural fermented indigo, water washed in clear streams, and dried in the sun, in keeping with ancient Japanese traditional technique. Stone mortar are tools used to grind grains and beans and are incredibly hard, but wear down with use, and cease to function properly. You can restore them by having a stone mason rework them. It is important for people to restore themselves to their beginnings and rethink themselves as well.
